(idiomatic, slang, aviation) In the Forces, "Hangar Queen" is not a proud title. It relates to a craft which requires a great deal of regular maintenance and has an unfavourable ratio of maintenance time to flight time. It therefore sits in the hangar and is systematically "cannibalized" (stripped of its parts) so that other craft may fly.
The Ballad of 499
Now many a ballad has been sung
About those Rebel nights,
Of how we fought, day in day out,
Against the Empire’s might
But no one sings a battle cry
For the girl that was left behind
She played her part, and gave her heart
That Hangar Queen 499….
